he upper section of the artwork is dominated by the multilingual Checkpoint Charlie sign: “You Are Leaving the American Sector” – displayed in English, Russian, French, and German. Beneath it, Devin Miles layers a series of powerful motifs: the Brandenburg Gate in vivid shades of red, the silhouette of the Statue of Liberty, a contemplative male portrait on the left, and flowing white and red paint elements. The composition evokes the atmosphere of an overexposed historical archive.
Berlin as a divided city, the Cold War, and the confrontation of political systems – the artwork draws upon real places and authentic symbols without relying on explanatory text. It speaks to viewers who are familiar with this history, offering them a condensed and emotionally charged encounter with its legacy.
