Behind him stands a red-and-white warning sign reading “Warning – 100 m – Swiss Border,” alongside handwritten documents and text fragments taken from motorcycle club regulations. The vertical format reinforces the upright, almost statuesque presence of the figure.
The association with the famous escape scene from The Great Escape—in which McQueen attempts to leap a border on a motorcycle—is embedded within the image itself, without ever needing to be stated explicitly. Devin Miles works with the collective visual memory of the viewer, allowing the artwork’s meaning to emerge through recognition and association.

Devin Miles (*1961, Duisburg) draws inspiration from the visual language of European and American cinema of the 1950s and 1960s. Screen legends meet symbols of popular culture and everyday aesthetics in his distinctive mixed-media technique, combining screen printing, painting, and digital image processing in compositions that often consist of up to twenty layers.
His works are represented in more than 80 galleries across Europe and form part of significant private collections, including the renowned Reinhold Würth Collection.
