Steve McQueen – cigarette, sunglasses, blue jacket – dominates the composition, his face shown in three-quarter profile. In the background appear a Porsche 911 S, the sign of the Hackberry General Store on Route 66, the Pegasus logo of a gas station, and handwritten documents from the F.I.M. Motorcycle Club. The designation “911 S” and the name “McQueen” are woven repeatedly throughout the artwork.
The composition layers photography, historical documents, and painterly elements into a richly textured visual narrative. Route 66 serves as a symbol of American freedom, the Porsche embodies precision engineering, and McQueen stands as the icon linking both worlds. Devin Miles (*1961, Duisburg) draws inspiration from the visual language of European and American cinema of the 1950s and 1960s. Screen legends meet symbols of popular culture and everyday aesthetics in his distinctive mixed-media technique, combining screen printing, painting, and digital image processing in compositions that often consist of up to twenty layers.
His works are represented in more than 80 galleries across Europe and form part of significant private collections, including the renowned Reinhold Würth Collection.
